Instagram story viewer FAQ
The questions we get most about watching Instagram anonymously, grouped by topic. Anything missing? Write to us and we will add it.
Anonymity and privacy
Is it really anonymous?
Yes. A story view exists only when a logged-in account loads the story. StoriesMask has no accounts, so the view is never created. The owner's list looks exactly as it did before you arrived.
Does the account owner get told?
No. Your name is never added to a viewer list, no notification is sent, and Instagram does not record profile visits for anyone.
What do you keep about me?
No. We keep no history of searched usernames or viewed media. Your watchlist and recent lookups exist only in your browser. Our privacy policy lists the little we process to run the site, such as short-lived server logs.
Can StoriesMask tell me who looked at my story?
Only inside the Instagram app, under your story. No outside tool can list your story viewers or profile visitors, and any site that claims to is not being honest.
How do I view someone's Instagram story without them knowing?
Type their public username into StoriesMask and press View stories. No Instagram account is used, so your name never reaches their viewer list and no notification goes out.
Is there an Instagram story viewer that needs no login?
Yes, this one. StoriesMask runs entirely in your browser without an Instagram account. You can use it even if you deleted Instagram or never joined.
Can StoriesMask show who viewed my story?
No, and neither can anyone else. Only Instagram can show story viewers, inside the app under your own story. Profile visitors are not recorded by Instagram at all.
Does the owner see that I opened their profile?
No. Instagram does not record anonymous profile visits, and StoriesMask never uses an account on your behalf.
Does the account find out I opened its followers?
No. The lists are read from public data with no account, so nothing is recorded and nothing is sent.
Stories, highlights, posts and downloads
Which files can I save?
Any story, highlight story, post, reel or profile picture. Photos come down as JPG and videos as MP4 with their audio, at the size Instagram serves, with nothing stamped on them.
Does it show posts and reels as well as stories?
Yes. The result page has four tabs. Posts carry likes, comment counts, captions and dates; reels carry their play counts. Every item opens full-screen and every item has a download button.
Is there a watermark on downloads?
No. Files are saved exactly as posted, with nothing added and no quality lost.
Can I save an Instagram story without the poster finding out?
Search the username, then press the download button on a story card or Save all for every live story. Photos arrive as JPG and videos as MP4 with sound. See the story downloader.
Can I see someone's Instagram highlights without them knowing?
Yes. Open the profile and switch to the Highlights tab. Every highlight loads with its stories and original dates. See the highlights viewer.
Can I see posts and likes without following an account?
If the account is public, yes. The post viewer shows every post with likes, comments, caption and date, and Show more keeps scrolling.
Is there a way to watch reels without signing in?
Open the profile on StoriesMask and tap Reels. Every public reel appears with its play count and plays with sound. See the reels viewer.
How can I see who is tagged in a story?
Look for the @ badge on a story card. StoriesMask lists every tagged account, and each one opens with a tap.
How long does an Instagram story stay up?
Exactly one day from the moment it goes up. StoriesMask prints the remaining hours and minutes on every live card, so you know how long you have to save it.
Do downloaded stories keep the music?
Yes. Videos and reels save as MP4 with the original audio track, including sounds added inside Instagram.
Can I download old stories?
Only if the owner pinned them to a highlight. Anything that expired without being pinned has left Instagram for good.
Can I tell when a highlight story was first posted?
Yes. Each story card shows the date it was originally posted.
What resolution is the download?
The largest version Instagram keeps, usually 1080 pixels across or more, as a JPG.
Does the download keep the audio?
Yes. Reels save as MP4 files with their original audio at the resolution Instagram serves.
Accounts, limits and legality
What is StoriesMask?
A free website that opens any public Instagram profile for you, stories included, without an Instagram account on your side. You see the live stories with their countdown, the highlights with their dates, the posts with their numbers and the reels with their play counts.
Do I need an Instagram account?
No. StoriesMask works without any Instagram account. It is the same whether you deleted yours, never had one, or simply do not want to use it.
Does it open private profiles?
No, and nothing honest does. A private profile is served only to the followers its owner approved. StoriesMask recognises a private account, says so, and stops.
Is StoriesMask free?
Yes, completely. No premium plan, no credits, no daily cap. The site is supported by ordinary display advertising.
Is an anonymous story viewer legal to use?
Looking at content its owner published to the whole internet is legal; it is the same material a logged-out visitor sees on instagram.com. Keep downloads for yourself and do not pass someone's work off as your own.
How is this different from the Instagram app?
The app logs every story you open against your account and hands that list to the owner. StoriesMask shows the same public content with no account involved, so there is no log, and it adds the things the app withholds: downloads, an expiry countdown, the full-size profile picture, tagged-account lists and a watchlist.
Which devices does it run on?
Any phone, tablet or computer with a browser. Safari and Chrome on iPhone, any browser on Android, and all desktop browsers. Nothing is installed.
A profile loads but shows no stories. Why?
Either nothing is live right now (stories vanish after a day), the account is private, or the handle has a typo. A story posted seconds ago can also take a minute to surface; try again shortly.
How fresh is what I see?
It is read from Instagram at the moment you press the button, not from a cache. Press it again for a fresh read. When a story hits the 24-hour mark it leaves Instagram and StoriesMask at the same time.
Is there a limit on how many profiles I can open?
No cap of any kind. Check as many profiles as you like, as often as you like, and pin the regulars to your watchlist for one-tap access.
Does it show unfollows?
No. Instagram does not expose unfollows, and no tool can list them reliably.
How many posts can I load?
As many as the account has. Show more fetches the next page every time you press it.
