Instagram Story Viewer Not Working? 9 Reasons and What to Do About Each

You typed a username into a story viewer and got nothing: an error, an empty grid, or a spinner that never ends. Nine out of ten times it is one of the reasons below, and most of them take seconds to fix.

1. The account is private

This is the big one. Instagram serves a private account's stories, posts and reels only to approved followers. No story viewer, StoriesMask included, can show them. The page should tell you the account is private; if a site shows a spinner forever instead, it is hiding the same answer.

Fix: none from outside. Only a follower can see it.

2. The username is slightly wrong

Instagram handles allow letters, numbers, dots and underscores. A missing dot, a swapped letter or a trailing period breaks the lookup. Display names (the bold name under the handle) are not usernames.

Fix: copy the handle from the profile page or the address bar (instagram.com/handle) rather than typing it.

3. There is simply no story right now

Stories last 24 hours. An account that posted yesterday morning has nothing live today. The grid is empty because the account's story is empty, not because the tool failed.

Fix: check Highlights, Posts or Reels on the same profile, or come back later.

4. The story just went up

A story posted seconds ago can take a minute to appear through public endpoints.

Fix: wait a minute and search again.

5. Instagram is rate-limiting the lookup

Instagram throttles public requests when traffic spikes. A viewer that worked an hour ago can fail for a few minutes and then recover.

Fix: wait a little and retry. If a public profile keeps failing for hours, tell the site's support with the username.

6. A browser extension is blocking the bot check

Most viewers use a silent bot check (Cloudflare Turnstile or similar) to keep scrapers out. Aggressive privacy extensions or script blockers can stop it from loading, and the search never starts.

Fix: allow the site in the extension, or try a private window.

7. You pasted a post link instead of a profile

A link like instagram.com/p/… points at a post, not an account. Most viewers need the profile.

Fix: open the post, tap the username at the top, and use that.

8. The account changed its username

Old links and saved handles stop working the moment an account renames itself. Instagram does not redirect.

Fix: find the new handle through a mutual follower or a search on Instagram.

9. The viewer itself is down or abandoned

Instagram changes its public endpoints regularly, and tools that are not maintained break and stay broken. Signs: every username fails, including huge public accounts, and the site has not changed in months.

Fix: try a maintained tool. On StoriesMask a failed lookup shows a specific message rather than an endless spinner, and public profiles that fail are usually fixed within hours.

A quick test

Search a large public account you know posts stories daily, such as a major brand or news outlet. If that loads, the tool works and the problem is with the specific account. If that fails too, the problem is the tool or your connection.
